Is American Cultural Influence Declining?

Despite a decade of America being dumped on from every corner of the world, and with the current administration apologizing for our very exsistence, Herbert London argues that American cultural influence throughout the world will continue into the 21st Century.

NBC Cancels ‘Southland’

NBC has canceled the critically acclaimed police drama Southland before airing a single episode this season. The series temporarily filled the Thursday 10 p.m. EDT timeslot of the long-running hit medical drama series ER last summer. Southland was praised by critics and progressive sexual activists for its dark, gritty tone and portrayal of a tough Los Angeles cop whose homosexual activity gradually became an increasingly prominent aspect of the narratives.

‘Zombieland’ Leads at Box Office, ‘Lying’ Lags Behind Old Pixar Films

The cheery action comedy Zombieland led at the U.S. movie box office this weekend, bringing in $25 million, a quite decent performance for the traditionally slow period in cinema attendance between summer blockbuster season and the holiday blockbuster season. The highly promoted anti-religion romantic comedy The Invention of Lying performed poorly in its first weekend, finishing fourth with $7.4 million in ticket sales. It ended up well back of the animated comedy Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ($16.7 million) and a 3D rerelease of…

Confronting Liberal Snobbery

The other day, I had reason to have e-mail correspondence with the head of the criminal division of the Attorney General’s Office of a state that will remain unnamed. Don’t worry. I’m not in any legal trouble. I simply had publicly opposed the idea of imposing a 15-cent "fee" on one’s Internet-access bill — something that Congress had put a moratorium on with the "Internet Tax Freedom Act," which was recently renewed. The fee is intended to fund a special task force to fight Internet-based…

The Gone With The Wind of Video Games

After taking Resident Evil 5 to task, I felt it was only fair to explain what I think makes a really good videogame.  Balancing intuitive gameplay and a thematically rich story makes The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time a game that truly transcends the medium.

Why Resident Evil 5 Sucks

Look, most games take awhile to really finish.  Resident Evil 5 is no different.  Problem is, you get to the end and realize it totally sucks because it not only mashes up a bunch of superior games, but it also falls back on a bunch of trite movie conventions.

Chan Reaches Film Landmark

International action film star Jackie Chan has announced his 100th film project, currently called Chinese Zodiac. Chan will star and co-direct with Rumble in the Bronx director Stanley Tong. Several other Chan films will hit the theaters beforehand. For more information, see the AP story. Jackie Chan is a cinematic great whose superb stunt work and ability to blend action and comedy rank at the very top with the achievements of the great silent film hero Douglas Fairbanks, a very underappreciated filmmaker. And like those of Fairbanks, Chan’s films stand for…

Obama Criticized For Not Filling Out A Women’s Bracket

No. The Czar of the Teleprompter was not criticized for failing to fill out a hotties bracket. USA Today’s Christine Brennan, who is usually a sensible sports columnist, upbraided President Obama for filling out a men’s NCAA bracket and ignoring the women’s tourney.
